Citizen watches for women

Women’s Citizen watches run from the 18.4 mm Fio to the 37 mm Calendrier, and almost all of them are Eco-Drive: any light keeps them charged, and there’s no battery to replace. What separates the lines is shape, size and how much water they can take, from jewellery-like watches that should stay dry to divers rated to 200 metres.

The lines, and how they differ

• Citizen L: the Bianca, Rainell, Ceci, Round and Arcly, all under sapphire crystal and rated to 50 metres. The Bianca is a slim rectangle, the Rainell comes as a 20 mm oval or a 26 mm case, and the Ceci and Round are round at 31.5 to 33 mm.
• Corso: the 27 mm Corso runs straight into an integrated bracelet, closed by a fold-over clasp with hidden push buttons, with dials in black or soft light blue, lilac and pink. It’s rated to 100 metres, so swimming and snorkelling are fine.
• Axiom: the 23 mm Axiom is part watch, part bracelet, with a crystal-set case on a slim steel bangle; the 30 mm version has glass running edge to edge over a black dial. Both are splash resistant.
• Fio and Small Tank: the smallest here, with 18.4 mm Fio cases and a 23.5 mm rectangle, on leather or steel.
• Calendrier: the 37 mm Calendrier shows the month, day, date and moon phase on a diamond-set mother-of-pearl dial, rated to 50 metres.
• Promaster: a real Promaster dive watch sized down to 36.5 mm, with a dive bezel, a screw-down crown and 200 metres of water resistance.
• Citizen Quartz: battery-powered Citizen Quartz watches at 24 to 27 mm, most with a day and date.

Choosing one

Think about water first. Axiom, Fio and the Small Tank are rated 30 metres, fine for rain and hand-washing but not for the pool. Citizen L, the Calendrier and the 30 mm Peyten are rated 50 metres, enough for swimming. Corso goes to 100 and the Promaster to 200. Then size: if most watches look big on you, start under 26 mm. If you like a date window, the Corso and the 33 mm Peyten both have one.

Questions

Does an Eco-Drive need sunlight? Any light charges it, indoor light included; daylight by a window is quickest. If the second hand starts jumping in two-second steps, the watch is running low and wants some light.

Which ones have sapphire crystal? The Citizen L models and the 33 mm Peyten. Most of the others use mineral crystal, which is tough but can pick up fine scratches over the years.
