Citizen Tsuyosa automatic watches

Tsuyosa is Citizen’s automatic sports watch with an integrated steel bracelet: the links run straight out of the case, so the watch and bracelet read as one piece of steel. It comes in 40mm and 37mm under sapphire crystal, with dials from black and blue to green, teal, aqua, red and purple, and in versions with a 60-hour reserve, a small seconds dial or 100 metres of water resistance.

A self-winding Citizen built around its bracelet

Citizen took the name from the Japanese word for strength. Every Tsuyosa has a stainless steel case, a brass dial and a fold-over clasp with push buttons, and it looks as right with a shirt cuff as with a T-shirt. Inside is a Citizen automatic movement: a weighted rotor winds the mainspring as your wrist moves, so there is no battery at all. The seconds hand stops when you pull the crown out, which lets you set the time to the second.

How the versions differ

• Tsuyosa 40mm: calibre 8210 with a date and about 42 hours of power reserve, in a 12.1mm case, water resistant to 50 metres. Most of the dial colours are in this size.
• Tsuyosa 37mm: the same movement in a smaller 11.5mm case that Citizen lists as unisex, with aqua, pink, purple and blue dials.
• Tsuyosa 60: calibre 8310, which runs about 60 hours off the wrist, in a slimmer case (10.9mm on most versions). Citizen also makes a gold-tone 40mm and 37mm with matching silver-tone dials, an easy pair for two people.
• Tsuyosa Small Second: calibre 8322 moves the seconds to a small dial of its own, with about 60 hours of reserve, in blue or green.
• Tsuyosa Shore: water resistant to 100 metres, with a glass caseback onto the movement, in a 12.8mm case on calibre 8210.

37mm or 40mm?

The 40mm is the usual men’s size and weighs about 138 g on its bracelet, according to Citizen. The 37mm weighs about 108 g and suits a smaller wrist or anyone who likes a more classic proportion. Wearing and caring for an automatic

Wear a Tsuyosa most days and it keeps itself wound. Leave it off longer than its reserve and it stops; give it a gentle swirl, set the time and it’s running again. Keep it off speakers, laptop lids and magnetic bag clasps overnight, since strong magnets can make a mechanical watch run fast. Citizen rates 50 metres as fine for swimming, not snorkelling, while the Shore’s 100 metres covers snorkelling too. Rinse it in fresh water after the sea or a pool. Questions

What is the difference between the Tsuyosa and the Tsuyosa 60? The Tsuyosa 60 uses calibre 8310, with about 60 hours of reserve against 42 hours for the 8210, and most versions sit in a thinner case. The integrated bracelet, sapphire crystal and 50 metre rating stay the same.

Does a Tsuyosa need a battery? No. It’s a mechanical automatic that winds itself as you wear it. A service every few years, following Citizen’s advice, keeps it running well.
