Bulova Super Seville watches

The Super Seville brings back the cushion-shaped case of Bulova’s 1970s original. The men’s watches, at 35mm and 37.5mm, run on Bulova’s Precisionist quartz with a sweeping seconds hand, and the 25mm Super Seville Mini is a two-hand quartz for women; every one sits under sapphire crystal with illuminated hands and markers.

The 37.5mm Super Seville

Bulova draws this one from the Super Seville Day-Date of the 1970s and calls its shape a retro TV-shaped case. It has a calendar under a flat sapphire crystal with a date magnifier, and the case runs into an integrated three-link bracelet with a push-button deployant clasp. Bulova makes it in silver-tone steel with a blue or green dial, in gold tone with a green or silver-white dial, and in two-tone with a black dial. Some of the two-tone and gold-tone versions add an ion-plated bezel. It weighs about 142 g, so it feels solid without being heavy.

The 35mm, with stone dials

The 35mm Super Seville uses dials cut from natural stone: blue sodalite, green jade and white magnesite. Because each dial is cut from stone, the pattern varies a little from one watch to the next. The jade dial on two-tone steel is the Super Seville 98A336. Same cushion case, same Precisionist movement and calendar, in a smaller size that suits a slimmer wrist or anyone who likes 1970s proportions. The Super Seville Mini

The Mini takes the shape down to 25mm and 7.6mm thick, with a grooved coin-edge bezel around a flat sapphire crystal, and the case runs into an integrated three-link bracelet with a push-button deployant clasp. Dials include white mother-of-pearl, red mother-of-pearl and silver-white. It is a two-hand quartz, kept simple so the shape does the talking. The Precisionist movement

The Precisionist is Bulova’s high-frequency quartz. Its crystal vibrates at 262 kHz, far faster than standard quartz, and the seconds hand sweeps around the dial instead of ticking, which is easy to spot on the wrist. Bulova rates it as accurate to seconds a year, where standard quartz is usually quoted in seconds a month. Questions

Can I swim with a Super Seville? No. The line is splash resistant, the 30 metre rating in Citizen’s chart, the one we follow for every brand: fine for rain and washing your hands, not for swimming or the shower.

35mm or 37.5mm? The 37.5mm has more dial colours and the classic metal dials; the 35mm is the one with stone dials and sits a little smaller and lighter, at about 135 g.

Is the Mini the same watch, only smaller? It shares the cushion shape, the integrated bracelet and the sapphire crystal, but it runs on a simple two-hand quartz instead of the Precisionist, with no seconds hand and no date.
