Men’s Bulova watches: dress, sport and automatic

Men’s Bulova watches split three ways: dress watches, sport watches and chronographs, and automatics that show off their movements. Sizes run from a slim 29 mm rectangle to the 46.5 mm Icon, and the movements range from standard quartz to Bulova’s high-frequency Precisionist and self-winding automatics.

Automatics

Bulova’s men’s automatics like to show their workings. The Maquina has a full skeleton dial, either in a 40 mm tonneau case, mostly on rubber, or in a 46 mm round case on a steel bracelet, rated to 100 metres. The 43 mm Sutton automatics add an exhibition caseback, so the skeletonized movement shows from both sides. The Marc Anthony Surveyor puts an open heart in a 40.5 mm octagonal case, and the Hudson is a quieter 39 mm automatic with a date, on leather. Most list about 42 hours of power reserve. Sport watches and chronographs

Marine Star is the sport line: 44 mm Series A automatics with a screw-down crown and 200 metres of water resistance, and Series B chronographs that time to a twentieth of a second for up to 60 minutes. The Lunar Pilot brings back the chronograph worn on the moon in 1971, with sapphire crystal and a high-performance quartz movement. For something dressier, the Prestige chronograph pairs a 40 mm case with sapphire crystal and 100 metres of water resistance.

Precisionist

Precisionist is Bulova’s high-frequency quartz: a 262 kHz crystal, eight times the rate of standard quartz, driving a smoothly sweeping second hand. The Icon 96B175 uses it for a chronograph that reads to a thousandth of a second, in a 46 mm case rated to 300 metres. The Jet Star, Series X and the 35 and 37.5 mm Super Seville use it too.

Dress watches

For a shirt cuff, the slim 29 mm Sutton rectangle on leather and the 40 mm Classic both use Bulova’s slim 9U13 quartz with a date. The Futuro, Phantom and Octava take bolder shapes and finishes. Questions

Which men’s Bulovas can I swim with? Anything rated 50 metres or more. Marine Star models are rated to 100 or 200 metres, the Oceanographer GMT and the bronze Mil-Ships automatics to 200, and the Icon to 300.

What is the tuning fork on the dial? It’s Bulova’s logo. In 1960 Bulova’s Accutron, which Bulova describes as the world’s first fully electronic watch, ran on a tuning fork.
