Calendrier is Citizen’s Eco-Drive calendar watch: hands on the dial show the month, the day and the date, and most models add the phase of the moon. The men’s watches are 44mm and 41.8mm with 100 metres of water resistance; the women’s Calendrier is 37mm, with a mother-of-pearl dial set with diamonds.

The men’s Calendrier

The Calendrier BU0057-54E is the model most people search for by name: a 44mm grey-tone steel case with a black dial, on calibre 8730 with month, day, date and moon phase, on a steel bracelet with a push-button deployment clasp. The BU2021-51L uses a different layout on calibre 8729, with the day and date on the dial, 12/24-hour time, a rotating inner ring and a screw-back case, behind a blue dial with luminous hands. It has no moon phase. The BU0080-52X is the slimmer one: 41.8mm and 11mm thick under sapphire crystal, with a salmon dial and the full month, day, date and moon phase.

The women’s Calendrier

The women’s model is a 37mm steel case only 10.15mm thick, on calibre 8651, with the month, day, date and phase of the moon on a mother-of-pearl dial with diamond accents. Citizen makes it in gold tone, in silver tone with a blue mother-of-pearl dial, and in two-tone. It is water resistant to 50 metres, which Citizen’s chart rates as fine for swimming. Reading and setting the calendar

Because the calendar is shown by hands rather than windows, the dial has a small scale for each function, and it reads at a glance once you know where each one sits. The moon phase disc follows the moon through its cycle. Eco-Drive charges from any light, daylight or a lamp, so the calendar keeps running without a battery change. Questions

Does every Calendrier have a moon phase? Most do. The BU2021-51L shows day, date and 24-hour time instead. For other makers’ moon phase watches, see our moon phase watches.

Does it need a battery? No. A fully charged Eco-Drive keeps running for months without light. If one has stopped after a long time in a drawer, leave it in daylight for several hours before you set it.

Can I swim with it? The men’s models are rated to 100 metres, fine for swimming and snorkelling. The women’s 37mm is rated to 50 metres, fine for swimming, not snorkelling.

Which size should I choose? The 44mm men’s models wear large, about 13mm thick and around 160 g on their bracelets, according to Citizen. The 41.8mm BU0080-52X is lighter, at about 138 g, and slides under a cuff more easily. The women’s 37mm weighs about 108 g.
