Citizen Axiom watches

Axiom is Citizen’s minimal Eco-Drive line: black dials under glass that runs right to the edge of the case, two or three hands, and very thin cases, 7.8mm on most of the 40mm men’s models. It comes in 40mm and 41mm for men, and in 30mm and as a 23mm bangle for women.

The men’s Axiom

Most men’s Axioms are 40mm wide and 7.8mm thick, on calibre J165 with hours, minutes and a date, so the dial reads like polished stone with very little on it. Citizen makes them in silver-tone, gold-tone and black ion-plated steel, on a steel bracelet with a fold-over clasp or on a leather strap, and some versions put small diamonds at the hours. The Axiom BJ6517-52E is the grey 41mm: 7.83mm thick, with three hands on calibre E031 and a black dial.

The women’s Axiom

The 30mm Axiom is 7mm thick, with the same edge-to-edge crystal over a black dial, on a steel bracelet in silver tone or gold tone. At 23mm, the Axiom bangle is part watch, part bracelet: a crystal-set case on a slim steel bangle with a jewellery clasp, only 5.75mm thick. It looks right on its own or stacked with other bracelets. Two newer women’s models have silver-tone or gold-tone dials in a 6.2mm case.

Bracelet, strap or diamonds

The strap changes an Axiom more than you might expect. On leather, the 40mm weighs only about 52 to 57 g by Citizen’s figures, less than half the 125 to 136 g of the bracelet versions, and it looks a little more compact. The bracelet adds weight and goes from the office to the weekend. The versions with diamonds at the hours keep the same plain black dial with a little more light on it, a good choice for a gift or an evening watch. For women, the 30mm on its bracelet weighs about 65 g and the 23mm bangle about 37 g.

Wearing a slim watch

A case this thin slips under a shirt cuff, which is the point of a dress watch, and the black dials make the men’s and women’s versions an easy matching pair. Axiom is splash resistant, the 30 metre rating in Citizen’s chart: fine for rain and washing your hands, not for swimming or the shower. Questions

Why do some men’s models have no seconds hand? The 40mm Axiom uses a two-hand movement, hours and minutes plus the date, which keeps the dial plain. The 41mm BJ6517-52E has a seconds hand if you want one.
