Caravelle Sea Hunter automatic watches

The Sea Hunter is a dive-style automatic that Caravelle brought back from its archive: a 39mm case in 316L stainless steel with a screw-back, a one-way rotating bezel and luminous hands and markers, water resistant to 200 metres. It winds itself as you wear it and shows the date, so there is no battery to change.

The watch

At 39mm wide the Sea Hunter keeps the proportions of an older dive watch, and at 14.3mm thick it sits tall on the wrist, the way a tool watch should. The bezel turns one way only, for timing anything from a swim to a parking meter, and the dial adds yellow accents to its luminous hands and markers. Under a mineral crystal, calibre 8215 is an automatic with a date. On the steel bracelet it closes with a safety fold-over clasp with push buttons and weighs about 156 g by Caravelle’s figures.

The dials

Most Sea Hunters are on silver-tone steel bracelets, with bright dials in orange, light blue and green, and a black dial: the Sea Hunter 43B175, the reference people search for most. What 200 metres means

We describe every brand’s water resistance with Citizen’s published chart. By that chart, 100 and 200 metre ratings are fine for swimming and snorkelling, not scuba diving; only watches marked Diver’s 200m are built and tested for diving with an air tank. So the Sea Hunter will happily go to the beach, the pool and the lake. Rinse it in fresh water after salt water or chlorine, never pull the crown underwater, and have the seals checked whenever the case is opened. Living with an automatic

Wear it most days and it stays wound. Left in a drawer it will stop; give it a gentle swirl, set the time and date, and it’s running again. When you set the date, keep the hands well away from midnight, roughly 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., so you don’t push against the date mechanism while it’s changing. Keep it off speakers and laptop lids overnight, since strong magnets can make a mechanical watch run fast, and plan on a service every few years. Is the Sea Hunter a real dive watch? It has the dive watch tools: a one-way bezel, luminous hands and markers, a screw-back case and 200 metres of water resistance. For scuba diving with a tank, choose a watch rated Diver’s 200m, such as the Citizen Promaster Dive watches.

Will it fit a smaller wrist? At 39mm it is one of the more compact dive-style watches we carry, though its 14.3mm height makes it look sportier than its width suggests.
