Citizen Brycen watches

Brycen is Citizen’s sporty everyday line, all of it Eco-Drive and all water resistant to 100 metres. It runs from old-school chronographs on brown leather and bold 44.8mm racing chronographs on silicone to plain three-hand watches on steel or Super Titanium bracelets.

The chronographs

The 44mm Brycen chronograph mixes a classic layout with a coloured bezel, a tachymeter and a screw-back case, on a brown leather strap, with a blue or ivory dial in a two-tone case. Calibre B612 times to a fifth of a second for up to 60 minutes and shows 12/24-hour time with a date. It wears big at 44mm, so it suits a medium to large wrist.

The 44.8mm Brycen is louder on purpose: a black case with racing-style pushers, a rotating 60-minute bezel and a bright silicone strap, in black with yellow or with blue. Calibre H500 times to the second for up to 60 minutes, again with 12/24-hour time and a date. At about 88 g on its strap, it is lighter than it looks.

The three-hand Brycen

The Brycen AW1840-50E is a 41mm black-dial watch in Super Titanium under sapphire crystal, on a titanium bracelet with a fold-over clasp and hidden push buttons. Citizen says Super Titanium is five times harder and 40% lighter than steel, and this one weighs about 104 g. The AW1855-52E is a 42mm in black steel, also under sapphire, on a steel bracelet. Both run on calibre J810, a three-hand Eco-Drive with a date. Earlier Brycens, like the 43mm green-dial AW1598-70X, used mineral crystal. Choosing a Brycen

Pick the chronograph if you’ll use the stopwatch, for a run, a parking meter or a roast in the oven, and the three-hand if you want the cleanest dial. Then the strap. Leather is warm and dressy but should stay dry. Silicone doesn’t mind water and rinses clean. A bracelet goes everywhere and is sized by taking out links. Questions

How do I read the tachymeter? It turns a time into a speed. Start the chronograph as you pass one kilometre marker and stop it at the next; the number the seconds hand points to on the scale is your speed in kilometres per hour. Our guide on how to read a chronograph covers the subdials too.

Can I swim with a Brycen? Yes. Citizen’s chart rates 100 metres as fine for swimming and snorkelling, not scuba diving. Don’t press the chronograph buttons underwater.

Does it need a battery? No. Eco-Drive charges from any light, and a full charge keeps it running for months.

Which Brycen is the lightest on the wrist? By Citizen’s figures, the 44.8mm chronograph on silicone weighs about 88 g and the Super Titanium AW1840-50E about 104 g, while the 42mm black steel AW1855-52E on its bracelet comes in at about 152 g.
