A watch is one of the few gifts that gets worn every day for years. That’s also why it can feel hard to choose. These questions usually get you most of the way.
What do they wear now?
Look at the jewellery and the watch they already wear. Someone who wears yellow gold will usually prefer a gold-tone watch; someone in silver or steel, a steel one. If their current watch is on a leather strap, they may like a dressier look; if it’s a chunky sports watch, they probably won’t switch to something small and delicate.
Where will they wear it?
- Every day, everywhere: a steel bracelet and at least 100m water resistance.
- At work and dinners: a slimmer watch, a simple dial, steel or leather.
- Outdoors and on the water: a dive watch or a tool watch such as a Citizen Promaster.
Size, without asking
Most men wear watches between about 38 and 42 mm, and many women’s watches run from about 26 to 36 mm. If in doubt, choose the middle of that range. Our case size guide explains how a watch fits.
The movement
For someone who never wants to think about a battery, Citizen Eco-Drive is the easy choice: it runs on light. For someone who appreciates craft, an automatic. Our guide to automatic, quartz or Eco-Drive goes through the differences.
For a fan
Citizen’s Star Wars and Marvel watches are officially licensed Citizen watches, with the same warranty as the rest of the range.
If it isn’t quite right
Regular-priced watches can be returned within 30 days under our return policy. Clearance watches are final sale, so for a gift, a regular-priced watch is the safer choice. Every watch comes with its full manufacturer warranty.
